Chern Institute of Mathematics ( CIM * ) was founded through the initiative of the late Professor S. S. Chern, who was also the first director of the Institute until 1992. The current director is Yiming Long, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Nobel Prize laureate C. N. Yang founded the section of theoretical physics* in the Institute in 1986. Molin Ge, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the chairman of this section.
Chern Institute of Mathematics is opened to outside visitors. Its goal is to draw mathematicians around the world to promote the development of pure and applied mathematics in China , and to train advanced personnel in mathematics. The principle followed by the Institute is: Base at Nankai, face the whole country, and eye the world.
Ever since its founding, Chern Institute of Mathematics organized many academic years on various subjects, and trained a large number of young mathematicians. Through these and other scientific activities, Chern Institute of Mathematics has made its unique contribution to the development of pure and applied mathematics in China .
Currently the research interest of the faculty at Chern Institute of Mathematics covers a wide range of subjects, including differential geometry, topology, nonlinear analysis, algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. Of course, the Institute welcomes visitors from any area in pure and applied mathematics.
* The name of "Nankai Institute of Mathematics" ( NIM ) has been changed to "Chern Institute of Mathematics" ( CIM ) since December 3 rd 2005 in memory of our founding director --- Prof. Shiing-shen Chern.
Chern Institute of Mathematics is supported by the Ministry of Education of China. It also receives support from R. R. Shaw, K. C Wong Education Foundation, Ministry of Sci. and Tech. of China, and National Natural Science Foundation of China.
